Samsung Galaxy J1 Review

  • 4.0 / 5
    • The good:
Budget choice, power saving mode, micro SD card slot
    • The bad:
      Low screen resolution

Samsung Galaxy J1 is an affordable solution for users who are looking to purchase their first smartphone and discover the benefits of Android. It’s also suited as an upgrade from older smartphones that aren’t able to keep up with the developments of these days. The 4.3-inch TFT screen is generous enough to provide the needed entertainment space when it comes to the phone. The 480 x 800 resolution could have been better, but we need to revert to the budget aspect of the device. With this in mind, we can go on and discuss about the other features this phone has.

Battery life is quite impressive, with up to 10 hours of talk time on 3G connections. The Li-Ion battery only has a capacity of 1850 mAh, but this is enough juice to power the Samsung Galaxy J1 through the day and even more, depending on your usage preferences. If you rely on the phone to be your music player, you can expect up to 40 hours of battery life. The Ultra Power Saving mode of the battery allows you to use the important functions, disabling the non-necessary ones in times of need.

The device comes with the 4.4.4 KitKat version of the Android OS, being on par with many other phones out there, so you can expect a great deal of functionality when it comes to this operating system. The OS is powered by a Spreadtrum chipset with a dual-core CPU. The Cortex-A7 has a clock speed of 1.2 GHz, making it suited for light multitasking. A downside would be that the device only has 512 MB of RAM memory, but thanks to the incorporated memory management features of the operating system, you will be able to make the most out of this value.

The internal memory of the Samsung Galaxy J1 is only 4GB, but this should worry you at all; you can add a micro SD card inside the smartphone and you can add even a 128 GB one in order to build a comprehensive multimedia library with your favorite songs and selfies. The secondary camera has a 2MP sensor, but this should be enough for some nice photos; you can enjoy the Palm Selfie feature of the camera in order to take photos in no time, without struggling with the device. You can rely on the front camera if you want to take higher resolution photos, as the 5MP sensor is enough for 2592 x 1944 resolutions. The front camera can also shoot 720p videos at 30 fps rates. The Tap to Take Pics added feature is also interesting, as you can tap anywhere on your J1’s screen to take a photo, dismissing the need of the shutter button.

All in all, if you’re looking for a smartphone that can introduce you to the world of Android, or if you’re just interested in a budget option that can still give you enough power to perform office tasks and enjoy some games, the Samsung Galaxy J1 is a great choice.
