Canon PowerShot SX600 HS Review

Canon recently introduced their newest point and shoot camera: the Power Shot SX600 HS. This small 2.4x4.1x1 inch camera weighs just around 6.5 ounces, making it easy to carry around all day long and even store in your pocket. With an 18x zoom lens and several high-tech features, users definitely get their money’s worth and then some.

The 16 megapixel PowerShot SX600 HS comes in three colors – red, black or white – and comes with a small handgrip on the right side in order to help avoid drops. The rounded edges of the camera make it comfortable to hold and also store. There are four buttons located on the top of the camera: the pop up flash, shutter release button, power button and the zoom rocker. Unfortunately, Canon did not install a mode dial but you can find most of the options under the Menu button located on the back of the camera. The zoom rocker ranges from 25 to 450mm, a range that is just right for both landscape shots and up-close macro shots.

Controls located on the back include buttons to play images, connect to another device via Wi-Fi, record movies and menu. Canon has also installed a “Function/Set Button”, which will allow users to adjust the white balance, drive mode, ISO, timer, image quality and metering patterns of their image. This button is located at the center of the four-way directional pad, which also includes flash, information display, exposure and macro focus.

There is no viewfinder on this camera, but the 3 - inch LCD screen, which offers a 460,000 - dot resolution should be a good alternative. The down sides to this screen are that the 460k resolution is not as sharp or vibrant as compared to other brands that have a higher resolution. Also, this camera is not touch-activated. These aren’t necessarily “bad” things, but they can be a deal breaker for users who prefer touch screens and intense coloring.

There are several new and/or updated features that Canon has added to the PowerShot SX600. One of these is the Creative Shot mode, which allows users to take a single picture and have the camera that image and filter it through five different color/crop options. It’s like taking six pictures in one. However, users cannot set the shutter speed or focus range when in Creative Shot mode.

Canon has also included built-in Wi-Fi, which allows users to connect their android devices to their camera via Wi-Fi and control their camera through their android device. Users can also use the app to post their pictures online.

With a 1.6 start and shoot time frame, and a 0.1 focus time, the PowerShot SX600 is best used for still shots. Continuous shooting, such as in sporting events, is possible but only at 1.6fps. Images are well above sharp with a score of 2,173-lines per picture. Noise levels are fairly high, but images are still more detailed than grainy.

Video recording is possible on this camera as well, but images appear grainier than still shots. This is like due to the 1080p30 resolution. During scene changes or quick camera movement, the camera focus is quickly adjusted automatically. Unfortunately, this camera picks up nearly every noise around it, including the zooming of the lens and wind. The recording setting is great for any basic shooting, but is still best for still shots.

  • Pros:
Small in size; Built in Wi-Fi feature; 18x zoom range; Sharp images
  • Cons:
High noise levels; Limited control in Creative Shot mode; Video quality could be better
