Crucial 250GB MX200 2.5" CT250MX200SSD1 Review

After Crucial released the MX100 last year and it became successful, they had to upgrade it to keep up with the competition and that’s when they released the Crucial 250GB MX200 2.5" CT250MX200SSD1. Crucial believe that the MX200 is a better MX100 in a wide array of areas. First of all, they have the Dynamic Write Acceleration technology used in this drive and their main focus is longevity and reliability, something they have accomplished with the MX200 line.

Anyone looking for an upgrade for their laptop or PC would find this line of SSDs very useful. They come in 3 different sizes, the 250GB, 500GB and the 1TB SSD. In this review, we cover the 250GB SSD. It comes with a wide variety of form factors such as the M.2 Type 2280, M.2 Type 2260,mSATA and 2.5” 7mm. This ensures that you can use it in a wide variety of applications such as Ultrabooks. The 7mm-9.5mm adapter bracket that is included makes it easy for users as well. What’s more, the True image cloning software also adds value to the Crucial 250GB MX200 2.5" CT250MX200SSD1.

When you get past the top line specifications, you will realize that the drive is primarily focused on endurance and reliability. The company decided to use its own RAIN technology, added Power Loss protection, 1.5 million hours MTBF rating and of course Data path Protection. As the Crucial camp has always insisted, reliability is their main concern and not performance. This becomes very easy when Crucial decides to use their own Micron NAND which means that they can dictate how long the SSD will be reliable.

Although the Crucial 250GB MX200 2.5" CT250MX200SSD1 may impress when it comes to reliability, it was another story when it came to performance. Through the tests, only the 500GB MX200 hit the top spot in reads when it came to the random workload. The 500GB model performed well in read and write activity as it came in second compared to other consumer SSDs. The 1TB MX200 also performed well. However, it had a few issues when it came to 4K benchmarks. Power consumption was better in the MX200 but its predecessor beat it in the real world workloads.

All in all, the MX200 didn’t impress as expected, its predecessor beat it in terms of performance in many areas despite Crucial’s promise that it was improved in all areas. However, since this is a mainstream SSD, many people would become concerned about the reliability and price rather than performance. And with that said, the Crucial 250GB MX200 2.5" CT250MX200SSD1 can be a good SSD as it comes with an exciting set of features(features associated with enterprise SSDs), affordable and is king when it comes to power efficiency. Although it lags behind when it comes to performance, am sure a good number of consumers will go for the price and reliability in place of performance. In this regard, the Crucial 250GB MX200 2.5" CT250MX200SSD1 will still find its way to the top when it comes to sales. This is a good SSD if you are more concerned about the reliability of an SSD.

  • Pros:
Good in power efficiency. A good set of features.
  • Cons:
Doesn’t outperform the MX100 in a good number of workloads
Our score:
4 / 5
